Any tips on ad-libbing in a theatre performance?

I'm playing Marty in my schools production of Grease and there are a few parts where I'm in the background while other people are talking and I need to ad-lib with the other girls. I never seem to know what to say and feel like I'm saying the dumbest things. Any good tips on how to improve my ad-libbing skills?
